Welsh Government: Pro bono advice on the first taxes in 800 years
The move towards further devolution of fiscal powers to Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland presents their governments with historic opportunities to achieve their various policy objectives. For example, from April 2018, Wales will levy a land transaction tax to replace stamp duty land tax, and a landfill disposals tax to replace landfill tax — the first Welsh taxes for nearly 800 years. We advised the Welsh Government as it assessed possible operational policy standards that could be used to take forward these new tax powers. Our international and national tax subject-matter expertise means we can help the key decision makers understand the link between their policy aims and the implications of these structures, and ensure leading practice in applying the legislation.
Ahead of the introduction of these new tax powers, the Welsh government launched two consultations. The firm is providing pro bono support to the Welsh Government, helping it analyse options on how best to use the devolved powers to tailor taxes to meet the needs of the Welsh people and its businesses, as well as supporting growth and jobs.
