Improving high value skills
Developing future business leaders
The breadth of our knowledge and expertise gives us the opportunity to contribute to the development of future business leaders – in the UK and globally.
Through our Deloitte Academy, we have put in place a range of tailored training programmes specifically focused on our clients and their needs. In particular, as individuals take on key positions of responsibility, our training provides them with significant personal support and helps them keep abreast of changes in the business environment.
As part of our commitment to effective management and governance of UK board directors, we provide a programme of briefings and bespoke training for board directors, both executive and non-executive. This programme has covered a range of subject areas including issues relating to corporate governance, remuneration, cyber security, trust, use of data and many more.
During the year board directors from FTSE 100, FTSE 250 and smaller listed companies have participated in the Deloitte Academy programme. We have also developed specialist briefing sessions for smaller listed companies and for senior executives below board level. The sessions are delivered in our dedicated business centre that allows the time and space for real debate and reflection.
In August 2011 we introduced the CFO Transition Lab – a personalised and exclusive one-day workshop for newly appointed CFOs, helping them make an efficient and powerful transition into their new role. The Lab helps the CFO to frame their priorities, assess their talent and organisation, and identify the correct approaches to managing stakeholder relationships. To date, 30 CFO Labs have been completed, this includes 10 FTSE 100, 10 FTSE 250 and 4 Public Sector organisations.
“Six months on and I still find myself referring back to the transition lab day and what it told me about myself and my priorities.” FTSE 100 CFO.
Supporting tomorrow’s leaders
We continue to build close links with schools through our Community Investment programme, focusing on supporting young people through education and into employment. Our investment in education and skills through pro bono, volunteering and cash in the last three years amounts to more than £9 million, more than a third of our overall community contribution. This investment has supported us to mentor and / or train more than 1,000 young people in FY13 through our employability and secondary school mentoring programmes.
Over the past two years, we have specifically worked with the Tower Hamlets Education Business Partnership on developing skills and education apprenticeships. In fact, this relationship has seen two apprentices secure full-time positions within Deloitte.
We are also helping to develop leadership skills amongst black and minority ethnic students at an early stage, capitalising on the Deloitte environment and access to our own business leaders. The annual Powerlist Foundation Summer Leadership Programme combines Deloitte expertise with the insight and inspiration of trustees from the Powerlist Foundation. It acts as a ‘seed bed’ for nurturing ambitious and conscientious young African and African Caribbean leaders, helping to transform the lives of the young people taking part.
Our Social Innovation Pioneers programme has also enabled our volunteers to build their networks and develop new skills and expertise in a dynamic and high growth sector. Feedback from the Deloitte staff involved shows that 67 per cent have used their Pioneers experience in conversation with clients, and 37 per cent have used skills gained on the programme in their normal client work. Our investment in the programme is also supporting skills acquisition in our local communities. Blue Sky, an alumnus of our Social Innovation Pioneer programme aims to break the cycle of re-offending by only employing ex-offenders. Our support of Blue Sky, which has also led to the employment of a member of their team into our kitchens in London, is an example of how small steps towards achieving real and long-term benefits to society.
“In terms of innovation and proof of concept in catering, our supply chain work through the Pioneers has been dramatic.”
