Case study
Ministry of Defence - UK defence footprint strategy
Since 2011, Deloitte has supported the Ministry of Defence’s (MOD’s) ‘Defence Infrastructure Organisation’ (DIO) in reshaping its future operating model, including the procurement of a future strategic business partner to help manage the MOD's 230,000ha estate. Our work has also helped determine the future size of this estate, through the development of a Footprint Strategy that seeks to deliver affordable and sustainable infrastructure of the right size and quality, in the right place, for Defence personnel to live, work and train.
Working alongside DIO and the Army, we supported the development of the Regular Army Basing Plan, announced by the Secretary of State for Defence in March 2013, which detailed a £1.8bn infrastructure investment to meet the Army’s requirement to generate military capability in the most effective way. The Plan represents a significant step towards the achieving the MOD’s plan to return nearly 20,000 troops from Germany to the UK by 2020. The investment also provides a welcome stimulus to the UK construction industry and will help create jobs across the regions of the UK, particularly when combined with the injection of funds in to UK economy previously spent by, and in support of, the Army’s presence in Germany.
