G8 Young Summit – Steve Hoy
“The G8 Young Summit (G8YS) is held each year ahead of the formal G8 meeting in order to prepare a set of solutions and recommendations to be shared globally, specifically, with the G8 Heads of State.
This year, I was given the opportunity to attend the G8 Young Summit along with eight other colleagues from Deloitte.
I had previously worked with the innovation team at Deloitte to run iSpace challenges around Deloitte Analytics. iSpace allows you to ‘crowd-source’ by posting challenging questions that capture innovative ideas from their teams and people firm-wide. There is always the difficulty of how to assess those ideas and take action on them, but by working with the innovation team we developed an approach whereby the best ideas got direct sponsorship from the Deloitte Analytics leadership. When the opportunity then arose for Deloitte to participate in G8YS, the innovation team recommended that I join our representation.
During the Summit, I participated in one of the sub-committees debating the global energy dilemma. As part of this group I worked directly with investment bankers, government advisors, deep sea exploration specialists and computer software experts – all selected to attend the event as future leaders and innovative thinkers. Collectively, we made recommendations to promote innovation in energy policy and technology which were presented to Chloe Smith MP at the end of the summit, who has since taken our ideas to the Prime Minister and Foreign Secretary. Our communique was also presented to the G8 Heads of State in Belfast.
Attending the G8YS was a fantastic opportunity for me personally and professionally. Engaging with truly inspiring people and being able to contribute to recommendations of solutions for some of the most important global issues facing the world today is an experience I will never forget.”
