It’s hard to believe when you look at the Olympic Park today, that this area formerly had some of the worst socio-economic indicators in the UK.
When Deloitte began working with the Mayor’s team to develop the master plan for this area it was polluted, difficult to access and suffering from a major lack of investment. For more than 100 years it had been a dumping ground for industrial and domestic waste. But thanks to the economic renewal of London 2012, the development to this area has been so vast that a whole new postcode has been created: E20.
Determined to ensure Games planning and Legacy planning were completely integrated, we helped to get the Legacy Company up and running well before the Games had even begun, the first time that had ever been done. And with the Games over, the expansion will now continue with new homes, public spaces and commercial opportunities. We’ve helped to develop the strategy for managing the Olympic Park in its next phase – procuring businesses to provide the services required to run the Park, as well as recommending stipulations to ensure that local people will benefit from the hundreds of new jobs, volunteering opportunities and apprenticeships that will be created through these contracts.
The creation of the Olympic Park is also clearly a great showcase for the UK construction industry and this boost will continue with the ongoing developments planned for the Park. Deloitte helped select the developers for the first phase of Chobham Manor, a family housing development near the Olympic Village, as well as advising iCITY on their successful bid to transform the Olympic Media Centre into a technology hub once the Games finished. With technology, media and telecoms companies springing up seemingly daily in east London, and a proven source of growth and innovation, iCITY will be a real boost for UK plc as we position ourselves as the tech leaders of Europe
Over the decade of delivering London 2012 it was often said that the Games were ‘a six week sports event in the middle of a 20 year regeneration project’. And through three Prime Ministers and three Mayoral terms, everyone involved has stayed true to that vision.
